Why couldn’t Steve Rogers lift Mjölnir in Avengers: Age of Ultron?

Last Updated on July 19, 2023 by Mohd Salman

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand and intertwine, debates about tumultuous events often bring out speculation and curiosity. No more is this the case than with the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, in which Steve Rogers, better known as Captain America, fails to lift Mjölnir, Thor’s hammer. Does this unexpected event have viewers questioning why couldn’t Steve Rogers lift Mjölnir? Let’s look at the various theories behind this occurrence and see if we can answer that question.

One potential reason for Steve Rogers’ inability to lift Mjölnir could be his lack of strength. Thor, as the Asgardian god of thunder, is inhumanly strong and capable of feats that would be impossible for a human. Though Steve Rogers has been enhanced to the peak of human potential, he is still human and therefore doesn’t have the same strength as an Asgardian god. This theory is further supported by the fact that for someone to lift Mjölnir, they need to be “worthy.” As Thor says in Avengers: Age of Ultron, “Whoever holds this hammer, if they are worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.” This power is likely referring to strength, which would explain why Steve Rogers couldn’t lift Mjölnir.

Another possibility is that Steve Rogers wasn’t deemed worthy by Mjölnir. Though we don’t know much about the hammer’s conscious ability to choose its wielder, we do know that it has some criteria for deeming someone worthy. This theory is supported by the fact that, in the comics, Mjölnir has refused to be wielded by people who are not deemed worthy, regardless of their strength. This theory is also supported by the fact that, in the MCU, we have seen Mjölnir be wielded by people other than Thor, such as Vision and Jane Foster. This means that even if Steve Rogers had the strength to lift Mjölnir, he still might not have been deemed worthy by the hammer itself.

Though we may never know the true reason for Steve Rogers’s inability to lift Mjölnir, these are just a few potential explanations, whether due to his lack of strength or Mjölnir’s refusal to be wielded by someone who is not deemed worthy.

How did Captain America lift Mjölnir in Avengers Endgame?

Captain America’s wielding of Mjölnir has led to much debate among fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some believe that it was simply a case of the Director giving Captain America a “cool moment,” while others believe that there was more to it than that. The answer may lie in a combination of the two.

First, let’s look at the source material. In the comics, Captain America is shown to be worthy of wielding Mjölnir on several occasions. In one instance, he manages to lift the hammer when Thor cannot due to being corrupted by the Red Skull’s influence. In another, he lifts the hammer to save Thor’s life. These are just two examples of many showing that, in the comics, Captain America is capable of wielding Mjölnir.

Now, let’s take a look at the film. In Avengers Endgame, Captain America is shown as capable of wielding Mjölnir like in the comics. When Thanos is about to kill Thor with Thor’s own Stormbreaker, then for this reason, Captain America can lift it and use it to save Thor’s life. This shows that, in the film, Captain America is also worthy of wielding Mjölnir.

So, how did Captain America lift Mjölnir in Avengers Endgame? It is possible that the Director wanted to give Captain America a “cool moment.” Still, it is also possible that they were drawing from the comics and showing that Captain America is worthy of wielding Mjölnir.
