There is no doubt that the Avatar movies have been a box office success, earning over $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office across its five films. Fans of the franchise have long looked forward to the continuation of the story, something that director James Cameron has promised in the form of Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5. Recently, Cameron gave an update in an interview saying that if the first two sequels don’t make enough money, there won’t be any more subsequent sequels in the franchise. Here is the complete story of the Avatar movie sequels and the information we have about them.
The first Avatar movie was released in 2009 and was a massive success, becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time (not adjusted for inflation). The story follows Jake Sully, a marine who is dispatched to the alien world of Pandora to help the humans mine a valuable mineral called unobtanium. While there, he falls in love with a local alien named Neytiri and joins her tribe, eventually becoming their leader in a battle against the humans who want to destroy their home.
The second Avatar movie, titled Avatar 2, is currently in development and is set to be released in December 2022. The plot is reportedly a continuation of the first movie, with Jake and Neytiri’s children being the focus. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are set to reprise their roles as Jake and Neytiri, respectively.
The third movie in the franchise, Avatar 3, is also in development and is set to be released in December 2024. Along with Worthington and Saldana, Sigourney Weaver is also set to return as Dr. Grace Augustine.
The fourth and fifth Avatar movies are currently in pre-production and are set to be released in December 2026 and December 2028 Even though Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 are all in various stages of development, it’s still unclear if they will actually be made. It all depends on the box office performance of Avatar 2, which is set to be released in December 2022. If the movie doesn’t perform well, it’s unlikely that the subsequent sequels will be made. So, Avatar fans will have to wait and see if the first sequel is a success before getting their hopes up for the next four movies.
